Gilas Women Gets First Dub At FIBA Women's Asia Cup Since Promotion To Division A in 2015

The Philippines finally scored their first W as they defeated Chinese Taipei 92 - 81 at the 2023 FIBA Women's Asia in Sydney, Australia, on Wednesday. After the victory, Gilas Pilipinas Women remains in Division A since being promoted in 2015.

The Filipinas were on the driver's seat early in the game keeping Chinese Taipei at bay with their efficient shooting. Clearly, it was a good day for Gilas Women.

Unlike the last couple of days, Jack Animam wasn't struggling anymore. She was scoring and getting rebounds comfortably in the paint. The rest of the team had their fun on the court as well.

Vanessa De Jesus showed once again why she's the real deal. She made 11/19 shots from the field and was a thorn in the side to her opponents.

Yu-Ting Lin was one of the bright spots for Chinese Taipei. Her scoring and rebounding was a major boost to her team despite trailing in double-digits.

Chinese Taipei did make a few runs in the fourth period but the Philippines had an answer each time.

Gilas Women managed to hold off Chinese Taipei and maintain their 10-point lead until the final buzzer.

Newcomer Vanessa De Jesus lead Gilas Pilipinas Women with 25 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals. Afril Bernardino also had 18, grabbed 10 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block.

Not to be outdone, Gilas Women center Jack Animam had a double-double finish with 16 points, 15 boards, and 1 steal.

In a losing effort, Yu-Ting Lin was the top scorer for Chinese Taipei and had a double-double of her own. She finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and 1 block.

Gilas Pilipinas Women advances to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
