Gilas Women Open SEA Games Three-peat Bid With 60-point Blowout Against Cambodia
Gilas Pilipinas Women gave Cambodia a huge wakeup call on Wednesday, via a 114 - 54 win on their home turf. The sixty-point beatdown on the host country that fielded five Naturalized players was a major boost for the Filipina ballers, opening their title defense at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.
Notably though, Gilas Women struggled to find their groove in the first quarter albeit leading the Cambodians early in the game. Offensively, they were in a bit of a rush, forcing their shots, and made a lot of turnovers in the process.
The Filipinas got their composure back in the second quarter which ultimately sparked the scoring rampage on Cambodia.
Ella Fajardo showed brilliance with 17 points for Gilas Women, Jack Animam added 16 points and 9 boards.
France Mae Cabinbin had 12 points, assists and 4 steals while Afril Bernardino chalked up 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals. Also, Camille Clarin contributed 11 points for the Filipinas.
Center Mariah Cooks finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds for Cambodia while Meighan Simmons added 11 points, 7 boards, dropped 4 dimes, and 2 steals.
Gilas Women will face Singapore on May 11 at 4 pm.
