Good As Gold: Gilas Women Beats Malaysia To Bag SEA Games Silver
Albeit falling short of a three-peat gold, Gilas Pilipinas Women still got the job done by getting the dub over Malaysia 77 - 63 for a silver medal finish at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.
The Filipinas wasted no time as they kept Malaysia at bay with a 21 - 10 lead in the first quarter. Janine Pontejos immediately caught fire from beyond the arc, hitting three triples early in the game.
The second period was no different as Gilas Women stretched their lead to 48 - 29 at halftime.
Malaysia started clawing back in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 11 points, 56 - 67, yet it wasn't enough to overcome the Philippines' defense and scoring throughout the game.
Janine Pontejos led all scorers for the Filipinas with 24 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Khate Castillo had 18 points while Camille Clarin added 9 points. Afril Bernardino also contributed with 7 points, grabbed 6 boards, 4 dimes and a couple of steals.
Hui Pin Pang finished with 15 points for Malaysia in a losing effort.
Gilas Pilipinas Women wrapped up their SEA Games campaign with a 5 - 1 record next to Indonesia (6 - 0), the undefeated gold medal winners in the tournament while Malaysia (4 - 2) took the bronze medal.
